The Banned Books
Fallacy

An Introductory Rant

Are Books Really Being Banned?

I see a post listing off “Banned Books” almost every time I’m scrolling. Naturally, I was alarmed. Book Censorship? Book Banning? How could such a thing be happening in 2025, and I hadn’t heard about it until now?

But I can’t take anything at face value. It’s like some toxic personality flaw. And I started researching obsessively about these book bans. It became my special interest. (Seriously, I can see everyone around me getting annoyed with how often I bring it up.) I completely fell down the rabbit hole on this one.

I started by asking myself: If you walk into a bookstore and find these titles prominently displayed, how could they be banned?

And the answer is: These books aren’t actually banned. Some school districts in particularly religious communities just don’t have them available in their public school library.

They aren’t being taken out of circulation. They’re not being scrubbed from the internet. In fact, free pdf versions for the majority of them can be found online. Not to mention, most of these novels have film adaptations. If these books really were banned, wouldn’t the adaptations be censored as well? Why bother restricting access to the novel, when audiences can still just watch the movie?

There are actually books that are classified in the U.S., so there’s no need to over-exaggerate with these fake lists. Maybe it’s just easier to make a shocking claim like the most popularly referenced books are now being banned. I’ll admit it’s an effective marketing strategy.

A certain demographic of people have a tendency to sensationalize things to get attention. Your words have meaning. How can you say these books are being banned when your post shows them for sale? It’s fucking ridiculous and I hate this shit. Maybe I’m not being very polite about it, but I’m really passionate about people changing obvious definitions to fit their narrative.

Are Books Being Banned by Project 2025?

Partnered with this false impression that books are being banned, is another rumor. Is there a list of books to-be-banned in Project 2025?

There are plenty of reasons to have an issue with the policies proposed in Project 2025, so I really don’t understand this weird compulsion to make up an additional reason.

I looked through the entire mind-numbing 922 page document and found *surprise* literally no mention of banning books, let alone a list of books that should be banned.

This is just one more prime example of why you should look into things for yourself instead of believing some over-dramatic social media post or a heavily politicized news entity. Don’t even just take what I have to say at face value. Anyone can fact-check this. There is no list.
